To improve a towing device for motor vehicles (16) comprising a ball neck (10) held in a vehicle-mounted receptacle, which carries a coupling ball (12) at its end facing away from the receptacle (30), such that it can be operated more safely, it is proposed that the towing device be provided with a sensor (100) for detecting an object (106, 108) acting on the coupling ball (12).
