The sensor device has at least one optical sensor, e.g. a video camera, positioned adjacent the automobile front windscreen, which is provided with a cleaning system for the area immediately in front of the sensor, the function and cleaning range of the cleaning system matched to the optical sensor, or controlled by the sensor signals.
