The travel wire clamp is made of a light-weight metal and has a pair of clamp rails (11,21) engaging the ridges (101,102) in a ridged travel wire (10), at least one of the clamp rails provided with a surface coating of a precious metal at the surface which contacts the travel wire ridge. The travel wire clamp may be made from a light-weight metal alloy, e.g. an Al alloy, provided with a plated surface coating of Cu or Ti, with the clamp rails provided by cooperating clamp halves (1,2) secured to the travel wire via a pair of screws (3,5).
