The roof rack for a motor vehicle has mountings (13) fixed to the roof (3) ad having a break away portion (13b) defined by a bolt with an annular groove (13c). Each rack bar has a fixing (12) formed integrally with it and having two support hooks (25) which allow pivoting locks (30) selectively retain the hooks on the mountings. Each lock can have a stop sprung towards the locking position.
