Internal combustion engine of an in-cylinder fuel injection type with at least one piston provided within a cylinder bore having a cylinder bore axis; a recess which is provided on a top surface of the piston; said recess extends from a first to a second section thereof and an imaginary line in said extension direction is defining a first side of said recess and a second side of said recess; a fuel injection nozzle is facing said first section of the recess and is provided for injecting fuel towards said recess and an ignition plug is facing a second section of said recess, wherein a bottom surface portion of the recess at said first side is deeper in a direction of the cylinder bore axis than a bottom surface portion of the recess at said second side.
