An air mass sensor (7) is arranged directly in the exhaust gas recirculation line (6) upstream of the exhaust gas recirculation valve (3). An exhaust gas cooler (8) may be integrated in the exhaust gas recirculation line. The valve (3) and exhaust gas sensor (7) may be formed as an integral unit. The sensor may comprise two heat sensors and two temperature sensors, connected to two Wheatstone bridges.
