The fuel injection system has a feed pump (1) for delivering the fuel from the fuel tank (3), followed by a high pressure pump (4) with a number of pump cylinders (5), with a dosing element (7,13) contained in a rinsing channel (22) between the feed pump and the high pressure pump. A distributor element (11) can be inserted between the feed pump and the pump cylinders of the high pressure pump, for distribution of the fuel stream between the individual pump cylinders. The distributor element and the dosing element may be combined in a rotary slider.
