Samsung is returning to a mix of Exynos and Snapdragon chips for the Galaxy Z Flip 8

An Exynos or Snapdragon in your Galaxy Z Flip 8

This approach has become a familiar pattern for Samsung. Previous Galaxy S series models have also used different chips depending on the region. The reasoning behind this is simple: Exynos chips are developed in-house by Samsung and are cheaper to use, whilst Qualcomm chips are often regarded as faster and more energy-efficient.

For the Galaxy Z Flip 8, the split is reportedly once again clearly geographical. In Europe and South Korea, you would find the Exynos 2600. In other parts of the world, a Qualcomm chip would be used, although it is not yet clear exactly which Snapdragon variant that will be. According to rumours, this approach does not apply to all of Samsung’s new foldable phones. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 and the new Galaxy Z Fold Wide, on the other hand, are said to be equipped entirely with Qualcomm chips.

It is striking that the choice of Exynos is not just a cost issue, but also a strategic one. As the chips are produced in-house at Samsung, the company is also helping its own chip division. At the same time, rising costs of components, such as memory, are a factor in the broader decisions regarding the devices.

Previous reports suggest that the Exynos 2600 performs less well than comparable Snapdragon chips, with less favourable results in terms of battery life as well. This is relevant for the Flip series, which, according to an insider, is primarily purchased for its design and compactness, rather than for maximum performance.

As for hardware upgrades, the Galaxy Z Flip 8 appears to be fairly modest. The battery and charging speed are expected to remain the same as the previous generation. However, Samsung is reportedly working on a new hinge design that makes the crease in the screen less visible. The camera setup is expected to remain unchanged.

The launch of the Galaxy Z Flip 8 is expected in July alongside other foldable models, with the Z Fold 8 and Z Fold Wide also on the schedule. Furthermore, rumours suggest that Samsung intends to expand the role of Exynos in future devices. This could even mean that later Galaxy S models will be equipped with Exynos chips more frequently across multiple regions.
