Italy's leaders hail Pope Leo as voice for peace on his first anniversary

Leo XIV spends his first anniversary as pontiff in Pompeii and Naples. Italy's leaders on Friday sent warm tributes to Leo XIV as the first American pope completes a year defined by peace appeals, international travel and friction with the White House. Leo XIV is marking the first anniversary of his election on 8 May 2026 with a pastoral visit to Pompeii and Naples - a day laden with personal and symbolic significance for the 266th successor of St Peter. Leo's first year as pope was marked by hundreds of audiences, both public and private, as well as undertaking two major journeys to the Middle East and to Africa, hosting a consistory with the College of Cardinals, and introducing reforms within the Roman Curia. The word "peace" has been a central theme, appearing more than 400 times in speeches delivered by the Bishop of Rome during his first year in office, according to Vatican News. Good wishes Italy's leaders offered warm congratulations when Leo was elected, and their words have continued to echo throughout the year. In a message on social media on Friday, Italian prime minister Giorgia Meloni renewed her gratitude to the pope for his "tireless message of faith, hope, peace, dialogue among peoples, and closeness to the least fortunate", adding: "In a complex time marked by great uncertainties, his voice represents a global point of reference, for Christians and not only." Deputy Italian prime minister Matteo Salvini thanked the pontiff on X for "his guidance and for his constant commitment to peace", while fellow deputy premier Antonio Tajani also celebrated Leo's anniversary. "With his strong commitment to peace, he has already charted a path of hope for millions of people around the world", Tajani wrote on X, adding: "Pope Leo reminds us all of the importance of always building bridges, through dialogue and encounter." The Pompeii and Naples visit is the first in a series of pastoral trips Leo XIV has planned across Italy over the coming months, including a visit to the island of Lampedusa - a primary entry point to Europe for migrants crossing the Mediterranean - on 4 July.
