Honestly the way the BAFTAs were handled is just frustrating.
The audience were made aware that John Davidson had Tourette’s in advance, the film I, Swear is about his life. People with Tourette’s have no control over their language, it is a disability.
Unfortunately a racial slur was shouted when Delroy Lindo and Michael B Jordan were on stage. The slur yelled is undoubtedly offensive, however the BBC are apologising on behalf of the audience member for their disability and all the rest of the media are having a great time piling on about it because they get to share a video with a slur in it.
Actor Jamie Foxx has gone so far as to claim John Davidson ‘meant that shit.’ Something the media are delighted to report on in a way that definitely doesn’t (ha ha) cause additional harm.
Now the BBC could have edited it out, but they didn’t. What they did edit out however was when Akinola Davies said ‘Free Palestine’.
Editorial choices were made, and it’s sadly no surprise that the BBC chose to air a harmful racial slur and demonise a disability, and remove a call for an end to the active genocide taking place in Palestine.
