A dangerous heat wave scorched the eastern United States on Friday, threatening July 4th celebrations, World Cup matches, and power grids as around 160 million Americans fell under major or extreme heat warnings. The National Weather Service warned that numerous daily temperature records were expected to fall on July 4th, with some monthly and all-time records also possible.

How did the heat wave affect July 4th celebrations in Washington?

Celebrations on the National Mall were partially postponed in the early afternoon after a young woman suffered apparent heat exhaustion and was evacuated from the Great American State Fair. Event staff said she was around the 30th person to be treated, and organisers shut the fair down shortly after. The annual Independence Day Parade in Washington, scheduled for Saturday morning, was also cancelled due to extreme heat.

Lines to enter the state fair stretched more than 400 feet at midday as temperatures climbed toward a forecast high of 102 degrees Fahrenheit. Inside the festival, attendees sheltered in short shadows cast by temporary structures. When organisers closed the event, a public address announcement directed fair-goers to the nearest exits and said it would reopen at 5pm.

What temperatures did the July 4th heat wave reach?

Preliminary data showed Washington's daily heat record was likely broken when a nearby airport recorded 102 degrees Fahrenheit, surpassing the previous July 3 record of 101 degrees set in 1966. In New York City, the heat index, which factors in humidity, reached 105 degrees Fahrenheit in the mid-afternoon. Forecasters had predicted a heat index of up to 115 degrees Fahrenheit for New York, though that peak was not reached.

How did the heat wave affect power grids across the US?

Intense heat and surging air conditioner usage strained electricity grids up and down the East Coast. New York utility provider Con Edison restored power to around 60,000 residents after heatwave-driven outages, with more than 22,000 still without power at around 4:30pm on Friday. PJM, which coordinates grids serving 67 million customers across the East Coast and parts of the Midwest, said data centres were prepared to switch to emergency backup power if needed, though that step was not taken.

Did the July 4th heat wave affect World Cup matches?

Argentina and Cape Verde played their World Cup match in Miami, where the forecast heat index at the 6pm kickoff was 100 degrees Fahrenheit. The Hard Rock Stadium has a partial roof canopy but no air conditioning. On Saturday, France and Paraguay were scheduled to meet in Philadelphia, where the heat index could reach 105 degrees Fahrenheit. FIFA introduced mandatory hydration breaks in each half of every match at this World Cup in response to the conditions.
