Trump slams Iran drone attack in Strait of Hormuz as 'foolish' ceasefire violation

US President Donald Trump on Friday condemned Iran for launching a drone attack in the Strait of Hormuz, calling it a "foolish" violation of the ceasefire agreement.

One drone struck a cargo ship while three others were shot down, Trump said in a Truth Social post, referencing an attack that occurred the day before.

Trump says yes. In a Truth Social post Friday, he wrote that one drone "solidly hit the upper deck of a large and very expensive Cargo Carrying Ship" and called the strike "a foolish violation of our Ceasefire Agreement."

Three other drones were shot down. The ceasefire took effect April 8, but sporadic attacks have continued since.

What happened to the cargo ship in the Strait of Hormuz?

Britain's maritime security agency UKMTO confirmed Thursday that a cargo ship in the strait was struck on its starboard side by an unknown projectile, damaging the bridge. No casualties were reported.

The incident occurred 7.5 nautical miles, roughly 14 kilometers, off the coast of Oman.

The UN's International Maritime Organization Secretary General Arsenio Dominguez announced a suspension of evacuation efforts for approximately 600 ships and 11,000 sailors stranded in the Gulf.

The war, launched by the US and Israel on Feb. 28, has severely disrupted shipping in the strategically vital waterway. Sporadic Iranian attacks on vessels have continued despite the April 8 ceasefire.
