From Rocafonda to the World Cup: Lamine Yamal's meteoric rise

Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are set to play at a record sixth World Cup in 2026, but the tournament may ultimately be remembered as Lamine Yamal's first. The 18-year-old Spain and Barcelona star has gone from playing on a concrete square in Mataro to becoming one of football's brightest talents, with Rocafonda at the heart of his story.

How did Lamine Yamal rise from Rocafonda to the World Cup?

Lamine Yamal's rise began in Rocafonda, a working-class neighbourhood in Mataro, where he developed his football skills on local concrete pitches. Barcelona spotted his talent at a young age, and within a few years he progressed from youth football to becoming a key player for both club and country ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

His uncle, Abdul Nasraoui, believed in that future long before Yamal became a household name. Abdul kept a replica World Cup trophy in his bakery in Rocafonda and would tell visitors it was reserved for the day his nephew won the real one.

Many people in the neighbourhood sensed Yamal was destined for greatness, but Barcelona's then youth football chief Jordi Roura acted first. After receiving a recommendation from a scout, Roura and colleague Aureli Altimira attended one of Yamal's trial matches and immediately noticed something different.

"We were there with Aureli and at the beginning we saw him and he looked a bit odd, kind of scrawny, he moved a bit strangely, and we said, 'hmm let's see...'," Roura told AFP.

As the game developed, Yamal's football intelligence became impossible to ignore. While other children chased the ball, he found space, waited for opportunities and executed actions with unusual speed and precision.

Why did Barcelona sign Lamine Yamal at such a young age?

Roura says Yamal possessed a quality that cannot easily be taught: natural dribbling ability. Playing on Rocafonda's unforgiving concrete surfaces helped sharpen his technique and quick reactions from an early age.

"Dribbling might be the most innate technical action," said Roura. "It's hard to train a dribbler. He had that."

The Barcelona official recalled how Yamal's feints and movement regularly produced moments that left coaches amazed. Despite his slight frame, the club quickly concluded he had exceptional potential and moved to sign him.

Negotiations with his parents, Mounir Nasraoui from Morocco and Sheila Ebana from Equatorial Guinea, progressed smoothly. Away from football, Yamal was described as a quiet and shy child who spent much of his time with his paternal grandmother Fatima.

Fatima was the first member of the family to move to Spain, arriving from Tangier in 1990 before gradually helping other relatives settle there. She established roots in Rocafonda and remains closely connected to the community that shaped her grandson.

Why is Rocafonda so important to Lamine Yamal?

Although Yamal also lived with his mother in Roca del Valles after his parents separated when he was three, Rocafonda remained his true home. The neighbourhood's influence is reflected in his famous goal celebration, where he forms the numbers 304 with his hands, the final digits of Rocafonda's postcode.

The gesture has become a source of pride across Mataro. Even in wealthier parts of the city, the number now appears as a tribute to the player who has put the district on the global football map.

Located northeast of Mataro's centre, Rocafonda has long struggled with a reputation linked to crime and poverty. Today, however, it is increasingly known as the place where one of football's biggest young stars grew up.

Local matches continue on the same courts where Yamal once played. A mural painted in 2025 stands nearby, celebrating the neighbourhood's most famous son.

Roura believes one trait has remained unchanged throughout Yamal's development.

"With all these great players, they're capable of doing the same, or more than they did when they were children, and that's very difficult, very rare," he said.

He added that Yamal always seemed to enjoy the toughest challenges, even as a child.

Can Lamine Yamal fulfil Rocafonda's World Cup dream?

Children gathered around the neighbourhood pitch still speak about Yamal as an idol and an example. The games continue much as they did during his childhood, with footballs occasionally flying over fences and into nearby streets.

Just down the road sits Familia LY 304, the bar run by Abdul after leaving the bakery business. For years he has answered questions about his nephew's career, but with concerns surrounding Yamal's fitness before the World Cup, he has chosen to remain quiet for now.

The replica World Cup trophy still occupies a place inside the bar. What once seemed like a distant dream now appears increasingly realistic, only three years after Yamal made his professional debut at the age of 15.

"When you see the resume he already has at 18, it's scary, so what this kid can achieve has no limits," said Roura.

Yamal was still studying for school exams during Spain's victorious Euro 2024 campaign, where his stunning goal against France announced him to a global audience. Moments from that tournament now decorate the walls of his uncle's bar alongside shirts and photographs from his rapidly growing career.

Nearly three decades after arriving in Spain, Abdul continues to work while holding onto the same hope he expressed years ago.

"Ojala, I hope, ojala," he said when asked about Yamal bringing the World Cup back to Rocafonda. "If we win the World Cup, then I'll talk."
