"textContent": "Sicily has been changing a lot in the last few years and this is not something you read in articles or theorise about, we see it on the ground almost daily.\n\nPeople are not coming here only for holidays anymore. They are relocating, and not in small numbers.\n\n### It’s not just retirees\n\nFriends, I know what you will tell me - Sicily is the paradise for retirees and that's where the numbers come from. In a sense, you are not wrong, retirees are still coming... and they are coming a lot. That hasn’t changed.\n\nBut now we’re seeing:\n\n * remote workers\n * young couples\n * families\n * people starting businesses\n\n\n\nFrom the US, Germany, the UK, Scandinavia, Eastern Europe, you name it, people from all over are choosing Sicily as their base. And more often than not we see people chasing Sicily as a base for digital nomads, investment or even starting your own business.\n\n### This is a shift, not a trend\n\nWe get messages almost every day asking how to move to Sicily, so we can say with absolute certainty that the demand here is growing, and it is growing fast.\n\nEven just on our daily walks we see more and more:\n\n * foreign number plates\n * people speaking English\n * international residents\n\n\n\nWe hear it from the locals and expects that have been living here for a while, within the last 5 years the shift has been undeniable.\n\n### Why now?\n\nFor years, people chose Spain or Portugal for their foreign investments, vacation homes or digital nomad bases.\n\nBut those markets changed:\n\n * prices increased\n * places became crowded\n * in many areas, you’re simply too late\n\n\n\nSicily is different, here you are still not too late, even as a young person. At least not yet. The market here is fairly accessible.\n\n### Why Sicily works\n\n**1. Price**\n\nSicily still offers lower entry points than most of Southern Europe. You can still find:\n\n * affordable apartments\n * large homes and lands\n * even villas at reasonable prices\n\n\n\nBut only if you understand the market. Otherwise, it’s easy to make mistakes.\n\n**2. Connectivity**\n\nThis is often underestimated. Sicily is well connected with several international airports:\n\n * Palermo\n * Catania\n * Trapani\n\n\n\nIf you choose the right location, getting in and out is very simple.\n\n### Location in Sicily matters (a lot)\n\nWe personally focus on western Sicily, especially areas like Terrasini.\n\nHere you get:\n\n * 20 minutes to Palermo\n * quick airport access\n * sea and mountains nearby\n * real local life, without overcrowding\n\n\n\nThat said, eastern Sicily has its own appeal. Some prefer Catania or living near Mount Etna. There’s no one “best” place, only what fits your life and finances. However, this has to be said, you have to be prepared for the lifestyle you choose.\n\nIt is easy to buy a cheap house in the middle of nowhere, but are you actually ready to live there? Or are you ready for out-of-season calm emptiness?\n\nFor these reasons we both believe it is crucial to do your research or come to visit Sicily before you commit to any kind of long term purchase - whether you choose Terrasini, Siracusa, Catania, Palermo or any other place, your experience will differ significantly, so you have to be very clear about what kind of life you wish to have here and where it is possible.\n\n### Why people are actually moving\n\nThe reasons are different for everyone.\n\nBut we hear patterns:\n\n * changes in taxes in other countries\n * certain tax benefits in Italy\n * more remote work flexibility\n * family connections (citizenship)\n * political reasons\n * simply wanting that authentic Mediterranean lifestyle.\n\n\n\nIn my opinion, all these reasons can be simplified as this - people simply want a better quality for their day to day life.\n\nSicily still offers that, even better, it is not yet artificially polished or over touristic. You can still experience all the local traditions, phenomenal food and the calm of the Mediterranean lifestyle (both in a good and in a bad way).\n\n### The relocation mistakes we see\n\n 1. **Choosing location based on price.**\n\n\n\nA €30–40k property can look like a great deal.\n\nBut often:\n\n * no services\n * no demand if you choose to resell\n * no long-term value\n\n\n\nCheap doesn’t always mean smart.\n\n 1. **Ignoring the importance of location for your day to day life**\n\n\n\nThis is the biggest one, Sicily is not one market. Your experience depends entirely on where you are.\n\nYou need:\n\n * access to airports\n * nearby cities\n * services\n * a functioning community\n\n\n\nThat’s what shapes your life here.\n\n 1. **Skipping proper checks**\n\n\n\nAlways verify:\n\n * legal status\n * technical documentation\n * urban planning\n\n\n\nThis is where many people go wrong.\n\n### Why timing matters\n\nRight now, Sicily is in a very specific moment: still affordable, but clearly changing.\n\nDemand is growing and some areas are already moving fast.\n\nAnd here’s the reality: if you wait until it’s obvious, you’re already late. Even now, good properties in strong locations are getting harder to find and the prices are increasing significantly.\n\nSo, at the end of the day, the question isn’t really if Sicily is changing, it’s whether you’re ready to be part of it. And, as someone who has relocated to this island and is absolutely in love with it, I can vouch that it is definitely worth it (but you have to be prepared to do your own homework and learn that Sicilian calm of not rushing or expecting for everything to work immediately).\n\nIf you wish to see our opinions of the shift of Sicily in video format, you can watch it here: https://youtu.be/hz8N8q-8tqs?si=FTGKzVO55wpI2Uvb.\n\nAnd if you’d like to read more of our stories and everyday experiences here, consider subscribing to the blog.
