Mentioning Contacts in iMessage on Mac

Hi, I'm trying to figure out how to mention contacts in iMessage on my Mac. I can't get the possible mention buttons to press, and I've tried all of the conventional activation methods. Any help would be great. I also can't get text predictions to work properly, and I can't figure out how to access them like I can on iOS. Thanks, Rich Y.
