Using face ID with voiceover

Hi folks, so here is part 2 of my adventures getting the hang of working without a home button, this time regarding face ID now that i can't use touch ID. So i've successfully set face ID up with the attention switched off, but am having a hard time unlocking the phone. How do people go about getting the device in position so that the camera can recognise you, and how do you know when it has recognised you so you can swipe up quickly enough before your time is up? I'm getting no audio or tactile clues to help me, unless there's something i can enable in settings that i'm not aware of. Thanks for any tips.
