Feature Request: Shared AI Workspace / Group Chat for ChatGPT
Hello OpenAI Team,
I’d like to suggest a feature that I believe could open up an entirely new way of using ChatGPT.
The Idea
Today, we have many messaging apps (WhatsApp, Messenger, etc.) for communicating with other people, and ChatGPT for communicating with AI. What is currently missing is a seamless combination of both.
My proposal is a Shared AI Workspace / Group Chat, where multiple people can collaborate in the same conversation while each uses their own personal ChatGPT account.
This is not account sharing. Every participant keeps their own account, settings, memories, subscriptions, and privacy. Only the conversation itself is shared.
AI Only When Needed
One of the key features would be a simple toggle when sending a message:
- Send to Group (normal conversation, no AI response)
- Ask ChatGPT (the AI analyzes the conversation and responds)
This prevents the AI from interrupting every discussion while still making it available whenever the group needs assistance.
For example, ChatGPT could:
- update project checklists
- summarize long discussions
- identify open tasks
- answer questions based on previous messages
- organize ideas
- generate meeting notes
- help plan next steps
Because the AI understands the full conversation history, it becomes a true collaborative assistant instead of just another chatbot.
Use Cases
This could be valuable for:
- Families (moving, travel planning, household organization, caregiving)
- Friends (creative projects, games, vacations, storytelling)
- Students (study groups and team assignments)
- Businesses (brainstorming, project management, meeting summaries)
- Clubs and volunteer organizations (event planning and coordination)
In other words, this is more than a messenger and more than a chatbot—it’s a collaborative AI-supported workspace.
Privacy
Personal Memory should always remain individual.
Information shared inside a collaborative chat should only be used within that workspace and should never automatically become part of another participant’s personal memory.
Business Model
To avoid account sharing, this feature could be offered as a separate subscription (for example, Family, Group, or Workspace).
Every participant would still need their own ChatGPT account. The subscription would unlock the collaborative workspace itself rather than sharing premium AI access between users.
I believe this could become an entirely new category of AI collaboration, combining the strengths of messaging apps with the organizational and reasoning capabilities of ChatGPT.
Thank you for building such an amazing product and for taking community feedback into consideration.
