Feature Proposal: Story Archive & Narrative Continuity Engine for Long-Form Creative Projects
To the Product Team, AI Research Team, Engineering Team, and Product Design Team,
First, thank you for the incredible work that has gone into ChatGPT. As a user who spends a significant amount of time developing long-form creative projects, I wanted to share a proposal that I believe could unlock an entirely new level of value for writers, worldbuilders, game designers, researchers, and anyone working on large, evolving projects over months or years.
The Problem
ChatGPT excels at brainstorming, drafting, editing, and collaboration. However, as projects grow larger, a new challenge emerges:
Project memory becomes difficult to navigate.
A long-running novel may contain:
- Hundreds of chapters
- Thousands of pages
- Hundreds of characters
- Decades of fictional history
- Multiple worldbuilding systems
- Extensive planning discussions
- Canon updates
- Revisions
- Future arc notes
- Character transformations
The information often exists somewhere in previous conversations, but finding it later can become difficult.
For example:
A writer may remember creating an important character six months earlier but may not remember:
- where the character was first discussed
- what details were locked as canon
- which future arcs depended upon them
- which benchmark chapters established their voice
The information exists.
The retrieval does not.
Proposal: Story Archive & Narrative Continuity Engine
I propose a dedicated project-level system designed to support long-form continuity, retrieval, worldbuilding, and narrative quality control.
This would not simply be a search tool.
It would function as a living project archive.
1. Story Memory & Canon System
Search Conversation History
Allow users to search across all project conversations.
Examples:
- Find first mention of character
- Find first mention of location
- Find planning discussion
- Find artifact references
- Find prophecy references
Example Query:
Find first mention of “Nongrelhar”
Result:
- Date
- Conversation
- Original planning discussion
- Related canon updates
Search Project Canon
Provide a canon-focused search system.
Example:
Show all canon related to Flamewing
Result:
- Character description
- Canon locks
- Physical characteristics
- Known abilities
- Relationships
- Major appearances
Canon Lock Tracking
Allow users to designate information as:
- Canon
- Tentative
- Brainstorming
- Deprecated
This would greatly reduce continuity drift.
2. Character Bible System
Every major character could automatically generate and maintain a Character Bible.
Example Character Bible Sections:
Identity
- Name
- Species
- Role
Appearance
- Physical description
- Distinguishing traits
Personality
- Values
- Motivations
- Fears
- Strengths
Relationships
- Allies
- Rivals
- Family
- Mentors
Character Growth
Track transformation over time.
Example:
- Chapter introduced
- Major changes
- Turning points
- Emotional growth
Canon Validation
Flag contradictions automatically.
Example:
Character previously established as humble.
Current draft presents arrogance.
Potential conflict detected.
3. Arc Tracking System
One of the most valuable additions.
Track:
Active Arcs
Current storylines in progress.
Completed Arcs
Resolved storylines.
Future Setup
Story elements introduced but not yet paid off.
Owed Scenes
This may be one of the most valuable narrative tools possible.
Examples:
- Goodbye scene owed
- Consequence scene owed
- Reunion scene owed
- Reaction scene owed
- Arrival scene owed
Many narrative problems arise not because a scene is wrong but because a scene is missing.
An automated system could help identify unresolved narrative obligations.
4. Narrative Guardrail System
Allow users to create custom story guardrails.
Examples:
Canon Check
Compare new content against established canon.
Transition Integrity Check
Detect skipped narrative bridges.
Scale Check
Ensure large creatures remain physically consistent.
Communication Check
Ensure established communication systems remain consistent.
Benchmark Check
Compare current chapter against established benchmark chapters.
5. Benchmark Chapter System
Allow users to designate benchmark chapters.
Example:
Chapter 104
- Environmental immersion
- Discovery
- Atmosphere
Chapter 123
- Emotional payoff
- Character transformation
- Relationship depth
Future chapters could be compared against benchmark standards.
Metrics could include:
- Narrative density
- Environmental presence
- Dialogue quality
- Emotional impact
- Character growth
- Worldbuilding integration
The purpose would not be to replace creativity but to provide quality reference points.
6. Worldbuilding Database
A searchable encyclopedia generated automatically from project content.
Potential sections:
- Characters
- Locations
- Organizations
- Species
- Creatures
- Artifacts
- Historical Events
- Cultural Systems
- Magic Systems
- Languages
- Timelines
Example:
Show all references to the Monolith
Result:
- Planning discussions
- Story appearances
- Related characters
- Associated creatures
- Unresolved mysteries
7. AI Research Opportunities
This proposal also intersects with several areas of AI research:
- Long-context retrieval
- Project-level memory
- Narrative continuity reasoning
- Character consistency modeling
- Story-state tracking
- Dynamic knowledge graphs
- User-controlled memory structures
The result could become a powerful model for how AI assists with complex, multi-year creative projects.
Why This Matters
ChatGPT is already an excellent creative collaborator.
The next evolution may not be better text generation alone.
The next evolution may be helping users manage and navigate everything they have already created.
Writers, game designers, researchers, educators, and worldbuilders are increasingly using ChatGPT for projects that span months or years.
The challenge is no longer creating information.
The challenge is maintaining continuity, accessibility, and understanding across enormous bodies of work.
A Story Archive & Narrative Continuity Engine would help transform ChatGPT from a conversation tool into a true long-term creative partner.
Thank you for your time, your work, and your continued efforts to improve this technology.
Respectfully,
A long-form author and worldbuilder who believes the future of AI-assisted storytelling lies not only in generation, but in memory, continuity, discovery, and preservation.
