Feature Request: Linked Project Folders for ChatGPT

Overview

Today, users working on long-term projects (game development, writing, illustration, research, business projects, studies, etc.) often need to repeatedly upload files and re-explain project context.

A useful improvement would be a Linked Project Folder system that allows users to connect a normal folder from their device to ChatGPT.

How It Would Work

A user creates a normal folder on their computer, tablet, or phone.

Example:

Project

  • Sprites

  • Documentation

  • Notes

  • Dialogues

  • Audio

  • Checklist.xlsx

The user could then right-click the folder and select:

“Link this folder to ChatGPT”

The folder would become a recognized project resource.

Privacy and User Control

Files would not be automatically uploaded to ChatGPT.

Instead, the folder would simply be registered as a resource explicitly authorized by the user.

The user would always remain in control and could:

  • Link a folder

  • Unlink a folder

  • Temporarily disable access

  • View all linked folders

  • Manage permissions at any time

Usage Examples

The user could ask:

  • “Show me the project checklist.”

  • “Find the note that mentions a specific topic.”

  • “Open the latest version of a sprite.”

  • “What files changed this week?”

  • “Compare this version with last month’s version.”

  • “Which tasks were completed since the last update?”

ChatGPT would only access the files required to answer the specific request.

Potential Use Cases

Game Development

  • Checklists

  • Scripts

  • Assets

  • Sprites

  • Documentation

  • Lore

Writing

  • Characters

  • Chapters

  • Worldbuilding notes

  • Timelines

  • Story drafts

Art and Illustration

  • References

  • Concept art

  • Approved versions

  • Archived versions

  • Style guides

Education

  • Course notes

  • Assignments

  • Research material

  • Study plans

Business

  • Documentation

  • Meeting notes

  • Product roadmaps

  • Internal knowledge bases

  • Project tracking

Software Development

  • Source code

  • Technical documentation

  • Feature roadmaps

  • Bug tracking

  • Architecture notes

Why This Feature Matters

Today, a significant amount of time is spent:

  • Searching for the correct files

  • Re-uploading documents

  • Re-explaining project history and context

A linked folder system could transform ChatGPT into a true project assistant while keeping users fully in control of their data and privacy.

The goal is not to automatically upload entire folders, but to allow users to explicitly connect project resources and let ChatGPT access only the information needed for each request.

This would greatly improve continuity, productivity, and long-term project management across many professions and creative workflows.
