Mia Dawson - Swandive
Over the past four years, my work has centered on the young music scenes of Los Angeles and New York. During this time, I closely followed and photographed the band Swandive, a group that began as high school friends playing backyard shows in Los Angeles before quickly moving into established venues such as the Troubadour and Lodge Room. After beginning a relationship with the band’s guitarist, my proximity to the band became personal and I found myself immersed in their world. Being placed inside and alongside the band, allowed me to experience unfiltered and intimate moments, which I sought to capture through my photographs. Even after my relationship with the guitarist ended and the band relocated to New York, I continued photographing them until their final show in the summer of 2025. While my work has since expanded to include many different musicians, these photographs now feel less like documentation of a band and more like a record that holds the ephemeral feeling of the intimacy and energy of that moment of youth.

This body of work consists of 35 mm black and white photographs that I have made in the past year that were made into cyanotypes. The images are people, places, and memories that are very important to me within this past year of my life. The cyanotype and original 35mm photograph being framed together serve as a way that these significant moments have been expanded on and reinterpreted.
