Western Libya’s politically and military divided state is continuing to hamper both the American and United Nations political processes in Libya.

The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) is continuing to push through their “mini-table” negotiations , while separately, the UN Security Council has reportedly received recommended names for possible sanction .

Both rival governments committed to upholding the Unified Budget Agreement as the Central Bank begins direct distribution of foreign currency.

Major Events This Week

  • The UNSMIL held a joint meeting of the Berlin Working Group and its Structured Dialogue Committee, which shared some of its findings with member states. The UNSMIL is hoping to retain international support for its process as it tries to regain momentum. The UNSMIL also announced the next meeting of the 4+4 Committee would take place May 12th in Paris.
  • Government of National Unity (GNU) Prime Minister, Abdulhamid Dabaiba and Government of National Stability (GNS) Prime Minister Osama Hammad in separate meetings announced they would commit to the Unified Budget Agreement.
  • The High Council of State (HCS) head Mohammed Takala suspended Ali Abdulaziz and Abdul Jalil al-Shawish from the council for taking part in the UNSMIL’s 4+4 Committee, saying that the UN processes must go through the HCS first.
