Going Green

Today we did something big: we went green and migrated our server to Stockholm, Sweden, one of @upcloud.com's many data centers that run on 100% renewable hydroelectric power.

For the past 3 months the BlueAT Network's PDS has been hosted in UpCloud's New York, USA (US-NYC-1) region, located in New York, USA. There was only one issue: UpCloud's New York region is one of the few regions that don't run on 100% renewable energy via hydroelectric power.

In fact, UpCloud's New York region uses only about 4% renewable energy, unlike their Stockholm, Sweden region (SE-STO1), which uses 100% renewable energy.

Hej Sverige, Hello Sweden

When picking where to move our server to, Sweden was a good choice due to its privacy laws and good server location.

One of the awesome things about using the AT Protocol is that it takes less than 20 minutes to move all your data from the US to Sweden, and the best part is most users didn't even notice we moved; everything still functioned perfectly. Besides, we needed to update our DNS records because moving to a new server gave us a new public IP.

Server Upgrades

Alongside going green, we also upgraded our server from the Developer plan with 2 GB of RAM and 30 GB of storage to the General Purpose plan with 2 GB of RAM and 50 GB of storage.

Bonus: the General Purpose plan comes with daily backups included, so we actually saved money.
