FR / NL / EN Un fait historique sans précédent, que personne ne veut reconnaître Le 28 juin, l'ambassade américaine privatisera le parc du Cinquantenaire pour célébrer le 4 juillet, sa fête nationale. Feu d'artifice, détecteurs de métaux, concert de Nile Rodgers… tout y sera. Tout cela au cœur de l'Europe, dans l'un des symboles politiques les plus forts de Belgique, fermé aux Bruxellois. Cela n'est jamais arrivé. Jamais, dans toute l'histoire de la Belgique, un État étranger n'a célébré sa fête nationale en s'appropriant ce lieu. Pas la France. Pas l'Allemagne. Pas la Russie. Personne. Lors du conseil communal du 18 mai, Benedetta De Marte (Ecolo-Groen) a ouvert ce débat avec clarté et légitimité. La réponse qu'elle a reçue — de Philippe Close, Bourgmestre de Bruxelles, et de Mourad Maimouni (Team Fouad Ahidar-Bxl+) — était un mélange de mauvaise foi, de paternalisme et, dans le cas de M. Maimouni, de propos si choquants qu'ils nous obligent à les dénoncer publiquement. L'argument de l'habitude ne tient pas Philippe Close a tenté de présenter cet événement comme une affaire courante. Il a déclaré que Bruxelles accueillait « une trentaine d'événements » chaque année liés aux communautés non belges et destinés à celles-ci. C'est tout à fait vrai, et c'est une chose dont il faut se réjouir, mais cela n'a rien à voir avec ce qui se prépare au Cinquantenaire et M. Close le sait. Ces événements sont ouverts au public. Ce sont des festivals, des fêtes populaires et des manifestations culturelles accessibles à tous. Aucun gouvernement étranger n'est allé jusqu'à privatiser l'un des plus grands parcs de Bruxelles pour son usage exclusif. Et qui plus est, l'ambassadeur ne souhaite même pas que d'autres Américains y soient présents. Extinction Rebellion travaille en étroite collaboration avec la communauté américaine à Bruxelles, et parmi les dizaines de citoyens américains avec lesquels nous travaillons, nous n'en avons encore rencontré aucun qui ait été invité. Ce que cette fête représente vraiment M. Maimouni a répété, comme une incantation, que cette célébration n'est pas « la fête d'anniversaire de Trump », mais celle d'un pays, d'une nation, d'un peuple. Soit. Alors posons la question directement : pourquoi ne célébrons-nous pas la fête nationale Bon, la plupart des Américains vivant en Belgique ne seront pas présents. Mais prenons son argument au pied de la lettre, par pure hypothèse. Pourquoi ne célébrerions-nous pas la fête nationale russe au Cinquantenaire ? Ou celle de l'Arabie saoudite ? Et pourquoi pas la Turquie ou le Maroc – deux communautés importantes présentes à Bruxelles ? Si ces célébrations concernaient strictement la culture et « le peuple », rien ne justifierait alors ce traitement de faveur de la part du bourgmestre. Alors pourquoi les États-Unis sont-ils si spéciaux ? La réponse, aussi inconfortable soit-elle pour le bourgmestre, est que ces célébrations ont toujours été façonnées par la politique. Dans notre cas, les grands fournisseurs militaires américains craignent d'être exclus des marchés européens alors que l'Europe s'empresse de s'armer, et Bill White veut se mettre en bons termes avec les élites politiques belges de droite et les chefs d'entreprise. Cette fête n'a jamais concerné le citoyen américain moyen, ni la culture américaine en général. En fait, il semble que la seule façon d'être invité soit d'apprécier Donald Trump autant que l'ambassadeur américain. C'est cette nuance que le bourgmestre refuse de reconnaître : il a accepté d'accueillir une célébration de l'administration Trump au cœur de l'Europe, où la majorité de la communauté américaine ne sera pas présente, à un moment où les États-Unis terrorisent leurs propres citoyens avec l'ICE, détruisent les réglementations climatiques, kidnappent des présidents (Venezuela), soutiennent des actes de génocide (Israël) et déclenchent des guerres (Iran). Voilà pour « Une nation. Sous Dieu. » Les propos de M. Maimouni : une ligne rouge franchie Ce qui s'est passé ensuite dépasse le simple désaccord politique. M. Maimouni a d'abord qualifié nos camarades de Gaia — qui demandaient l'interdiction du feu d'artifice pour protéger la faune du parc — de « bobos wokistes ». Un choix de mots très révélateur de ses positions. Il a ensuite affirmé qu'Extinction Rebellion mettait en danger « la sécurité des Bruxellois dans leur ensemble ». Cette accusation relève de la calomnie. Notre organisation est pacifiste et non-violente, c'est un fait documenté et constant. Que M. Maimouni émette cet « avis » sans le moindre fondement dit beaucoup sur la qualité de son argumentation. Mais le pire est venu ensuite. Dans une comparaison aussi obscène qu'irresponsable, M. Maimouni a mis en parallèle notre contestation de cet événement avec une hypothétique interdiction de la commémoration de la Shoah en raison des actes de Netanyahou. Cette comparaison est choquante et honteuse. Elle instrumentalise la mémoire des victimes de la Shoah pour neutraliser toute critique politique. Elle confond délibérément — ou révèle une incompréhension sidérante — la différence entre commémorer des victimes d'un génocide et offrir une scène de prestige à un gouvernement en exercice. Ce n'est pas de la maladresse. C'est une tentative d'intimidation par l'accusation implicite d'antisémitisme. Ses collègues ont tenté de le faire taire, lui rappelant que la scène était filmée. Ils avaient raison de le faire. Nous, nous ne nous tairons pas. Une question écologique fondamentale Cette lutte n'est pas seulement symbolique. Elle est profondément, concrètement écologique. Le Parc du Cinquantenaire est l'un des rares grands espaces verts du centre de Bruxelles. Philippe Close lui-même le reconnaît : c'est « un vrai poumon vert ». Dans une ville ravagée par les canicules, la pollution et l'imperméabilisation des sols, ces espaces sont devenus des infrastructures de survie — pour les humains comme pour le vivant. Et que fait-on de ce lieu ? On le privatise. On le sécurise. On le ferme partiellement. On y organise un événement gigantesque — nuisances sonores, feu d'artifice, pression logistique considérable — pour célébrer l'État qui a joué le rôle le plus destructeur dans l'expansion mondiale du productivisme fossile, du consumérisme de masse et du sabotage climatique organisé. Le symbole est vertigineux. Chaque jour, on demande aux citoyens de réduire leurs émissions, de changer leurs comportements, d'accepter des restrictions. Et dans le même temps, on offre à la puissance la plus responsable du désastre climatique une scène triomphale dans un espace naturel public européen. Ce n'est pas une contradiction. C'est une démonstration : les luttes écologiques ne valent rien lorsqu'ils entrent en conflit avec des intérêts géopolitiques. Bruxelles avait le choix Bruxelles aurait pu dire non. Non à la privatisation d'un espace public pour un État étranger. Non à l'instrumentalisation diplomatique du symbole le plus fort de la capitale européenne. Non à la mise en scène triomphale d'une puissance engagée dans l'accélération du désastre climatique. Elle a choisi autrement. L'histoire retiendra qu'en 2026, alors que des gouvernements d'extrême droite arrivaient au pouvoir partout dans le monde et que notre marge de manœuvre pour éviter une catastrophe climatique irréversible se réduisait, Bruxelles a offert son plus bel espace, son image et sa légitimité symbolique à ceux qui organisaient notre destruction collective. Le peuple bruxellois, lui, n'a rien eu à dire et n'était pas invité. Bruxelles Environnement a encore le pouvoir d'empêcher cela. Nous l'appelons à assumer ses responsabilités envers la nature et les habitants de cette ville, en se joignant à nous pour s'opposer à cette manifestation. Dit alles in het hart van Europa, een van de sterkste politieke symbolen in België, afgesloten voor de Brusselaars. Dit is nog nooit eerder voorgekomen. Nooit in de hele geschiedenis van België heeft een buitenlandse staat zijn nationale feestdag gevierd door zich deze openbare ruimte toe te eigenen. Niet Frankrijk. Niet Duitsland. Niet Rusland. Niemand. Tijdens de gemeenteraadsvergadering op 18 mei opende Benedetta De Marte (Ecolo-Groen) dit debat met duidelijkheid en legitimiteit. De reactie die ze kreeg – van Philippe Close, burgemeester van Brussel, en Mourad Maimouni (Team Fouad Ahidar-Bxl+) – was een mengeling van kwade trouw, paternalisme en, in het geval van de heer Maimouni, woorden die zo ernstig waren dat we ze publiekelijk moeten noemen. Het argument van de gewoonte gaat niet op Philippe Close heeft geprobeerd dit evenement af te doen als iets alledaags. Hij verklaarde dat Brussel elk jaar „een dertigtal evenementen“ organiseert die verband houden met niet-Belgische gemeenschappen en voor hen bestemd zijn. Dat is volkomen waar, en dat is iets om blij mee te zijn, maar het heeft niets te maken met wat er zich in het Jubelpark afspeelt en dat weet de heer Close. Deze evenementen zijn open voor het publiek. Het zijn festivals, volksfeesten en culturele evenementen die voor iedereen toegankelijk zijn. Geen enkele buitenlandse regering is zo ver gegaan om een van de grootste parken van Brussel te privatiseren voor exclusief eigen gebruik. Bovendien wil de ambassadeur niet eens dat andere Amerikanen erbij aanwezig zijn. Extinction Rebellion werkt nauw samen met de Amerikaanse gemeenschap in Brussel, en van de tientallen Amerikaanse burgers met wie we samenwerken, hebben we er nog geen één ontmoet die is uitgenodigd. Wat deze ceremonie werkelijk betekent De heer Maimouni herhaalde meerdere malen dat deze viering geen „verjaardagsfeestje voor Trump“ is, maar dat van een land, een natie en een volk. Nou ja, de meeste Amerikanen in België zullen er niet bij zijn. Maar laten we zijn argument eens bekijken aan de hand van een hypothetisch voorbeeld. Waarom vieren we de Russische nationale feestdag niet in het Jubelpark ? Of die van Saoedi-Arabië ? Of wat dacht u van Turkije of Marokko – twee grote gemeenschappen die in Brussel aanwezig zijn ? Als deze vieringen strikt om cultuur en “het volk” zouden draaien, dan rechtvaardigt niets deze speciale behandeling door de burgemeester. Waarom is de VS dan zo bijzonder ? Het antwoord, hoe ongemakkelijk dat ook is voor de burgemeester, is dat deze vieringen altijd door de politiek zijn bepaald. In ons geval zijn grote Amerikaanse militaire aannemers bang om buitengesloten te worden van de Europese markten nu Europa zich haast om zich te bewapenen, en wil Bill White zich in de gunst werken bij rechtse Belgische politieke elites en industriële leiders. Dit feest heeft nooit gedraaid om de gemiddelde Amerikaanse burger, noch om de Amerikaanse cultuur in het algemeen. Het lijkt er zelfs op dat de enige manier om uitgenodigd te worden is om net zo dol te zijn op Donald Trump als de Amerikaanse ambassadeur. Dit is de nuance die de burgemeester weigert te erkennen – dat hij ermee heeft ingestemd om een feest ter ere van de regering-Trump te organiseren in het hart van Europa, waar de meerderheid van de Amerikaanse gemeenschap niet aanwezig zal zijn, op een moment dat de Verenigde Staten hun eigen burgers terroriseren met ICE, klimaatregelgeving afbreken, presidenten ontvoeren (Venezuela), medeplichtigheid aan genocide (Israël) en het ontketenen van oorlogen (Iran). Daar gaat ‘One Nation. Under God'. De woorden van de heer Maimouni : een rode lijn overschreden Wat er daarna gebeurde, gaat verder dan louter politieke meningsverschillen. De heer Maimouni omschreef onze medestrijders van Gaia – die pleiten voor een vuurwerkverbod om de dieren in het park te beschermen – als “woke bourgeoisie”. Een woordkeuze die veel zegt over zijn opvattingen. Vervolgens beweerde hij dat Extinction Rebellion “de veiligheid van alle Brusselaars” in gevaar bracht. Deze beschuldiging is lasterlijk. Onze organisatie is pacifistisch en geweldloos, een vaststaand en onbetwistbaar feit. Dat de heer Maimouni zijn “mening” zonder enige grond verkondigt, zegt veel over de kwaliteit van zijn argumentatie. Maar de ergste opmerking kwam later. In een obscene en onverantwoordelijke vergelijking trok de heer Maimouni een parallel tussen ons protest tegen dit evenement en een hypothetisch verbod op de herdenking van de Holocaust vanwege de daden van Netanyahu. Deze vergelijking is schokkend en beschamend. Ze maakt misbruik van de nagedachtenis aan de slachtoffers van de Holocaust om elke politieke kritiek te neutraliseren. Het verwart opzettelijk – of onthult een verbijsterend misverstand – het verschil tussen het herdenken van slachtoffers van een genocide en gematigde kritiek op een specifieke regering. De twee kunnen niet verder uit elkaar liggen. Dit is geen onhandigheid. Het is een poging tot intimidatie door middel van een impliciete beschuldiging van antisemitisme. Zijn collega's probeerden hem het zwijgen op te leggen en herinnerden hem eraan dat de scène werd gefilmd. Ze hadden gelijk dat ze dat deden. Wij zullen niet zwijgen. Een fundamentele ecologische kwestie Deze strijd is niet alleen symbolisch ; hij is diepgaand en concreet ecologisch van aard. Het Jubelpark is een van de weinige grote groene ruimtes in het centrum van Brussel. Philippe Close erkent dit zelf en omschrijft het als “een echte groene long”. In een stad die geteisterd wordt door hittegolven, vervuiling en bodemafdekking, zijn deze ruimtes een overlevingsinfrastructuur geworden — zowel voor mensen als voor andere levende soorten. En wat doet de gemeente met deze plek ? Ze privatiseert hem. Ze zet hem af. Ze sluit hem gedeeltelijk af. Er wordt een grootschalig evenement gehouden – lawaai, vuurwerk en aanzienlijke logistieke druk – om de staat te vieren die de meest destructieve rol heeft gespeeld in de wereldwijde uitbreiding van de productie van fossiele brandstoffen, massaconsumptie en georganiseerde klimaatsabotage. Het symbool is duizelingwekkend. Elke dag wordt van burgers gevraagd hun uitstoot te verminderen, hun gedrag te veranderen en beperkingen te accepteren. En tegelijkertijd krijgt de macht die het meest verantwoordelijk is voor de klimaatramp een triomfantelijk podium aangeboden in een openbare, groene Europese ruimte. Dit is geen tegenstrijdigheid. Dit is een demonstratie : ecologische strijd is waardeloos wanneer deze in conflict komt met geopolitieke belangen. Brussel had een keuze Brussel had nee kunnen zeggen. Nee tegen de privatisering van een openbare ruimte ten behoeve van een buitenlandse staat. Nee tegen de diplomatieke instrumentalisering van het sterkste symbool van de Europese hoofdstad. Nee tegen de triomfantelijke enscenering van een macht die vastbesloten is de klimaatramp te versnellen. Ze kozen anders. De geschiedenis zal vastleggen dat in 2026, toen extreemrechtse regeringen overal ter wereld aan de macht kwamen en onze kans om een onomkeerbare klimaatramp te voorkomen steeds kleiner werd, Brussel zijn mooiste ruimte, zijn imago en zijn symbolische legitimiteit aanbood – aan degenen die onze collectieve vernietiging organiseerden. De inwoners van Brussel hebben nooit iets te zeggen gehad en werden niet uitgenodigd. Bruxelles Environnement heeft nog steeds de macht om dit te voorkomen. We roepen hen op om hun verantwoordelijkheid jegens de natuur en de inwoners van deze stad te nemen door samen met ons tegen dit evenement in te gaan. Fireworks, metal detectors, a live performance from Nile Rodgers – the works. All of this in the heart of Europe, one of the strongest political symbols in Belgium, closed off to the people of Brussels. This has never happened before. Never in the entire history of Belgium has a foreign state celebrated its national holiday by appropriating this public space. Not France. Not Germany. Not Russia. No one. At the municipal council meeting on May 18th, Benedetta De Marte (Ecolo-Groen) opened this debate with clarity and legitimacy. The response she received—from Philippe Close, Mayor of Brussels, and Mourad Maimouni (Team Fouad Ahidar-Bxl+) — was a mixture of bad faith, paternalism, and in Mr. Maimouni's case, words so serious that they force us to name them publicly. The argument doesn't hold water Philippe Close tried to make the event seem like business as usual. He said Brussels hosts "about thirty events" each year related to, and for, non-Belgian communities. That's absolutely true, and something to be celebrated, but there's a problem with the Ambassador's party that Close refuses to see. These events are largely open to the public. They are festivals, popular celebrations, and cultural events accessible to everyone. No foreign government has gone as far as to privatize one of the largest parks in Brussels entirely for themselves. And what's more – the Ambassador doesn't even want other Americans to be there. Extinction Rebellion has been working closely with the American community in Brussels, and across the dozens of US citizens we're working with – we have yet to meet one who's been invited. What this ceremony really represents Mr. Maimouni repeated several times that this celebration is not "Trump's birthday party,” but that of a country, a nation, and a people. Well, most Americans in Belgium won't be there. But let's entertain his argument with a hypothetical. Why don't we celebrate the Russian national day at the Cinquantenaire ? Or Saudi Arabia ? Or what about Turkey or Morocco – two major communities present in Brussels ? If these celebrations were strictly about culture and “the people” - then nothing justifies this special treatment from the Mayor. So why is the US so special ? The answer, uncomfortable for the Mayor as it is, is that these celebrations have always been shaped by politics. In our case, major American military contractors are afraid to be shut out of European markets as Europe scrambles to arm itself, and Bill White wants to make nice with right-wing Belgian political elites, and heads of industry. This party has never been about the average US citizen, nor American culture at large. In fact, it seems the only way to be invited is to be just as fond of Donald Trump as the US ambassador. This is the nuance that the Mayor refuses to acknowlegde – that he's agreed to host a celebration of the Trump administration in the heart of Europe, where the majority of the American community will not be present, at a time where the United States is terrorizing its own citizens with ICE, destroying climate regulations, kidnapping presidents (Venezeula), supporting act of genocides (Israel) and starting wars (Iran). So much for "One Nation. Under God". Mr. Maimouni's words : a red line crossed What happened next goes beyond mere political disagreement. Mr. Maimouni described our comrades from Gaia — who are calling for a ban on fireworks to protect the park's wildlife — as "woke bourgeoie." Diction that says quite a lot about his views. He then claimed that Extinction Rebellion endangered "the safety of all Brussels residents". This accusation is defamatory. Our organization is pacifist and nonviolent, an established and indisputable fact. That Mr. Maimouni issues his "opinion" without any basis says a lot about the quality of his argumentation. But the worst comment came later. In an obscene and irresponsible comparison, Mr. Maimouni drew a parallel between our protest against this event, and a hypothetical ban on the commemoration of the Holocaust because of Netanyahu's actions. This comparison is shocking and shameful. It exploits the memory of the victims of the Holocaust to neutralize any political criticism. It deliberately confuses — or reveals a staggering misunderstanding — the difference between commemorating victims of a genocide, and measured criticism of a specific government administration. The two could not be more different. This is not clumsiness. It is an attempt to intimidate by implicit accusation of antisemitism. His colleagues tried to silence him, reminding him that the scene was being filmed. They were right to do so. We will not be silent. A fundamental ecological question This struggle is not only symbolic ; it is deeply, concretely ecological. The Cinquantenaire Park is one of the few large green spaces in the city center of Brussels. Philippe Close recognizes it himself, describing it as "a real green lung". In a city ravaged by heat waves, pollution and soil sealing, these spaces have become infrastructure for survival — for humans as well as for other living species. And what does the commune do with this place ? They privatize it. They secure it. They partially close it. There is a massive event being held — noise, fireworks, and considerable logistical pressure — to celebrate the state that has played the most destructive role in the global expansion of fossil-fuel production, mass consumerism, and organized climate sabotage. The symbol is dizzying. Every day, citizens are asked to reduce their emissions, change their behavior, and accept restrictions. And at the same time, the power most responsible for climate disaster is offered a triumphal stage in a public, green European space. This is not a contradiction. This is a demonstration : ecological struggles are worthless when they conflict with geopolitical interests. Brussels had a choice Brussels could have said no. No to the privatization of a public space for a foreign state. No to the diplomatic instrumentalization of the strongest symbol of the European capital. No to the triumphal staging of a power, committed to accelerating climate disaster. They chose differently. History will record that in 2026, when far-right governments were coming to power across the world, and our window to avoid irreversible climate catastrophe was narrowing, Brussels offered its most beautiful space, its image, and its symbolic legitimacy – to those organizing our collective destruction. The people of Brussels never had a say, and were not invited. Brussels Environment still has the power to prevent this. We call on them to fulfill their responsibility to the natural world, and the residents of this city, by standing with us against this celebration.
