Essential Reading

Literacy is a perennial concern in education. Standards are lamented, strategies launched, policies revised, and detailed plans drafted—yet year after year, the same issues persist with little meaningful progress.

There are many reasons for this, but two are particularly salient. First, literacy is not a single skill but a complex, interwoven set of practices that develop over time. Second, students encounter a wide and often overlapping range of barriers as they learn to read, write, speak, and engage with academic language.

Another clear and obvious reason is that teachers have too little time, training and support to address literacy challenges for their students.

There is no silver bullet solution, but building teacher knowledge about the essentials of literacy is a start.

My new book - 'Literacy Essentials for Every Teacher ' - attempts to do what it says on the tin. Pre-order it now and be ready for launch next week.

I share concise, essential knowledge on the following:

Reading

Writing

Talk

Vocabulary

Literacy assessment

Literacy and SEND

Not only that, but there are free resources too. Find some of my new free tools on my RESOURCES page. I'm developing more bespoke resources for teachers and leaders, so make sure you're signed up to find out more first.

Literacy essentials could just be essential reading!
