HOUSTON: Japan took a surprise lead against Brazil in their FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32 clash after Kaishu Sano found the net in the 29th minute, putting the Asian side 1-0 ahead.
Despite trailing, Brazil remained the more dominant side throughout the opening 50 minutes, controlling possession and creating the majority of the scoring chances.
The Brazil team are enjoyed 66 possession compared to Japan's 34 per cent , while completing 331 passes at an impressive 93 per cent accuracy, far superior to Japan's 154 passes with 89 per cent accuracy.
Brazil also outshot their opponents 8-4 and registered three shots on target, while Japan managed only one effort on target, Sano's decisive strike.

The in-game win probability continued to favour Brazil, with the five-time world champions given a 23 per cent chance of winning in normal time and a combined 55 per cent likelihood of progressing, including extra time, despite Japan holding a 45 per cent chance of sealing victory.
Brazil have so far earned two corners to Japan's two, committed just one foul compared to Japan's six, while both teams remained disciplined with no red cards. Brazil received one yellow card, while Japan had two bookings.
As the match entered the second half, Brazil continued to press for an equaliser, but Japan's defence held firm to protect Sano's first-half goal.
