WEB DESK: Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has called for greater representation of developing countries at the United Nations, emphasising that all nations, regardless of size or strength, are equal members of the international community.

Speaking at the UN, Wang urged the world body to amplify voices from the Global South, highlighting the need for a more inclusive multilateral system as the international community grapples with overlapping crises.

Global instability and civilisational challenges

Wang painted a stark picture of the current global landscape, warning that “the ship of civilisation has entered dangerous waters with hidden reefs and violent storms.”

He noted that fresh challenges were emerging in quick succession, giving rise to intertwining crises, while deep-seated disputes persisted and “black swan and grey rhino events” continued to surface.

The Chinese top diplomat stressed the importance of upholding the authority and status of the United Nations as the cornerstone of global governance.

A white paper issued by China aims to foster international consensus on effective responses to these pressing challenges, according to Mr Wang.

Push for Middle East ceasefire

Wang called on all parties to commit firmly to a ceasefire in the Middle East and work towards establishing a sustainable security architecture in the region.

China has routinely positioned itself as a proponent of dialogue and stability in major conflicts, including those in the Middle East and Ukraine.

Beijing remains the largest buyer of Iranian and Russian oil, including both pipeline and seaborne supplies, even as it presents itself as an indispensable player in global diplomacy.
