Woman’s death in Karachi probed over domestic violence allegations

KARACHI: The death of an 18-year-old woman in Surjani Town, allegedly linked to domestic violence, has prompted investigators to seek exhumation of her body for a post-mortem examination, police and officials said on Sunday.

The case of Misbah, who was found dead earlier this week, has been registered as a murder investigation after initial findings suggested possible foul play. Police have written to relevant authorities seeking permission for exhumation in order to determine the exact cause of death through forensic examination.

According to officials, the move comes after growing suspicions regarding the circumstances of her death, which was initially treated as a domestic incident. The family had reportedly buried the body without a post-mortem, a move that has complicated early forensic assessment.

Allegations of domestic violence and investigation findings

Police investigators have claimed that the arrested suspect, identified as Shahryar Butt, has confessed during interrogation to subjecting the victim to physical violence. Authorities further said a screwdriver, allegedly used in the assault, was recovered from the suspect’s residence.

Officials stated that the victim was allegedly struck on the head during a violent altercation, which they believe ultimately led to her death. They further alleged that the accused attempted to conceal the severity of the injuries before abandoning the victim.

Investigators also said the suspect admitted to being involved in multiple marriages and worked in a commission-based recovery role. He was reportedly arrested after fleeing the scene following the incident.

Police have also recorded the statement of an online taxi driver who transported the critically injured woman from Malir to Surjani Town, describing it as a key development in reconstructing the sequence of events.

Authorities said the exhumation and subsequent post-mortem would be crucial in confirming medical evidence and establishing the exact cause and manner of death as investigations continue.
