He said the statements coming from Iran had “no relation to reality,” adding that discussions with Tehran had been difficult and unreliable. A senior U.S. administration official, speaking anonymously, also pushed back against Iran’s account, describing the emerging arrangement as a “performance-based” agreement. Under its terms, Iran would not receive access to frozen funds until it fully complies with its commitments, the official said. The official added that Iran’s nuclear material would be dismantled and removed under the deal, and insisted that Tehran’s nuclear programme would be fully rolled back. He further stated that no financial assets would be released unless Iran meets its obligations, and said the agreement would also ensure the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and prohibit Iranian support for armed groups. The comments came after Iranian state media presented a different outline of the draft agreement, claiming it would involve the gradual release of frozen Iranian assets, relief from oil sanctions, and a broader easing of restrictions. According to those reports, nuclear-related discussions would be deferred to a later stage. A separate Iranian source told Reuters that the proposed framework could include sanctions relief, the unfreezing of billions of dollars in Iranian funds, and a pause in hostilities across multiple regional fronts, including Lebanon. However, the source did not specify what concessions Tehran might offer in return. The contrasting accounts highlight continued uncertainty over the shape of any potential agreement between Washington and Tehran, particularly on core issues such as Iran’s nuclear programme, sanctions relief, and regional security commitments.
