The Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT) has successfully carried out its first Endovascular Aortic Repair (EVAR) procedure at its new hybrid theatre in the Maryam Basheer Building on May 14, 2026.
According to a statement, the procedure was performed on a 47-year-old post-renal transplant patient suffering from a high-risk 8.1 cm infrarenal aortic aneurysm. Due to the patient’s condition, including a low ejection fraction of 25–30%, doctors determined that open surgery was not suitable. EVAR is a minimally invasive alternative to traditional open vascular surgery. It is generally used in high-risk patients as it reduces surgical trauma, blood loss, and recovery time.
Medical teams placed a stent graft while preserving both the patient’s native and transplanted renal vessels.
The procedure was jointly led by vascular surgery teams from SIUT and the SMBB Institute of Trauma Karachi, with support from departments of cardiothoracic surgery, anaesthesia, and radiology. The operation was supervised by Prof Ziad Sophie, with Dr Fahad Tariq Berlas, Dr Adeel Zafar, Dr Ghulam Ali, Dr Nadeem Ahmed, Dr Areeba Salim and Dr Irfan Tariq among the operating team.
Hospital officials described the procedure as a significant step forward in expanding advanced vascular care services at SIUT, particularly in providing complex procedures free of cost to patients.
They said the operation highlights growing capacity at the institution to manage high-risk vascular cases using modern, less invasive techniques.
