Re-polling ordered in G-B constituencies amid unrest and rigging complaints
The Gilgit-Baltistan Election Commission has ordered re-polling in multiple constituencies following violent incidents, allegations of irregularities, and disruptions that affected voting in the region’s elections.
According to the latest unofficial and unconfirmed results, the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has emerged as the leading party with 10 seats in the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly, followed by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) with four seats. Independent candidates, including those backed by Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI), have secured seven seats, while the Majlis Wahdatul Muslimeen (MWM) has won one seat.
Despite the emerging numbers pointing towards a possible coalition government between the PPP and PML-N, the Election Commission’s decision to order re-polling in key areas could still affect the final balance of power.
Polling annulled in two constituencies
The Election Commission has annulled polling in constituencies GBA-15 Diamer-I and parts of GBA-16, directing voters to return to polling stations on June 15.
In GBA-15 Diamer-I, voting at a female polling station in Loshi/Joshi Thak was declared void after serious law and order disturbances, including stone-pelting and firing. Officials said the situation deteriorated multiple times during polling hours, forcing repeated suspensions and preventing many voters from casting their ballots.
Similarly, in GBA-16, polling at three stations, Gechi, Thor Khaya, and BHU Thor Seri, was also cancelled due to reported irregularities and procedural complaints. Fresh voting at these stations will be held on June 15 alongside GBA-15.
Allegations of rigging and voter exclusion
The Election Commission said its decision was based on complaints of electoral malpractice and reports that voters were denied their right to participate in the process. Authorities are also reviewing claims of irregular conduct at several polling stations.
The developments come as political parties begin negotiations for government formation in the region. Sources say the PPP and PML-N are in discussions to form a coalition, with the PPP expected to take the chief minister’s office and the PML-N likely to be offered the governorship. A 60:40 formula for cabinet distribution is also under consideration.
