SHIGAR: Voting began on Sunday in constituency GBA-12 Shigar as residents joined voters across Gilgit-Baltistan in electing members of the regional assembly.
According to election officials, a total of 46,594 registered voters are eligible to cast their ballots in the constituency. Voters started arriving at polling stations early in the morning, with men and women turning out in significant numbers to exercise their right to vote.
A total of 71 polling stations have been established across the constituency, where nine candidates are contesting for the assembly seat.
Authorities have put in place extensive security arrangements to ensure the smooth conduct of the polling process. Around 500 personnel from Punjab Police have been deployed in addition to district police and other law enforcement agencies.
Special security measures have been implemented at sensitive and highly sensitive polling stations. Additional personnel have been stationed at sensitive locations, while strict monitoring is underway at polling stations classified as highly sensitive.
Officials said the polling process is continuing in a peaceful atmosphere, with voters waiting in queues for their turn to cast ballots.
Polling will continue uninterrupted until 5pm, after which vote counting will begin.
