WEB DESK: US President Donald Trump said he was “not Mojtaba Khamenei’s favourite person” as he discussed the prospects of a nuclear agreement with Iran, while also outlining his administration’s energy, trade and foreign policy priorities. Speaking during a White House event, Trump said a deal with Tehran could eventually lead to a meeting with Iran’s Supreme Leader and stressed that Iran must never be allowed to acquire a nuclear weapon. He said Washington could secure Iran’s enriched uranium even without a formal agreement and claimed the Strait of Hormuz would reopen if a deal is reached. Referring to Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Trump remarked that he was “not his favourite person” but added that the United States was prepared to act independently if required. Trump also linked energy security to broader strategic objectives, claiming that the United States had “eliminated the Iranian leadership, navy and air force”. Turning to domestic policy, the US president reiterated his support for coal as a key source of affordable energy. He argued that successful countries continue to rely on coal-fired power generation and announced plans to invest $700 million in coal plants. “There is no alternative to coal” for meeting America’s electricity needs, Trump said, adding that lowering energy costs remained a central goal of his administration. On the war in Ukraine, Trump said it would be beneficial for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin directly, describing dialogue as essential to ending the conflict. He also expressed confidence that peace could be achieved in Lebanon and warned that attacks on US forces could trigger another conflict, while maintaining that Washington would prevail through either military action or negotiations. Trump further said a trade agreement with India was likely in the near future and called for improved governance in Cuba.
