"textContent": "ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said on Thursday that the government plans to phase out tariffs across multiple commercial sectors over the next five years to boost flagging exports and attract foreign direct investment.\n\nChambering two high-level sessions on macroeconomic growth, the implementation of the National Tariff Policy (NTP) 2025-30, and sweeping reforms in the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), Sharif underlined that export-led growth remains government’s core economic priority.\n\n\"An active, transparent National Tariff Commission (NTC) is indispensable for promoting domestic industry, commerce, and investment,\" Sharif said.\n\nHe directed authorities to modernise the NTC by leveraging global best practices, information technology, and artificial intelligence (AI).\n\n## Tariff reductions targeting pharma, logistics and construction\n\nOfficials briefed the prime minister saying the NTP 2025-30 will implement targeted, phased reductions in customs duties to drive competitiveness.\n\nThe meeting proposed the total elimination of Customs duties on raw materials, with a particular focus on active ingredients required to manufacture life-saving cancer medications locally.\n\nIt recommended the removal of duties on reefer (refrigerated) containers and semi-trailers to modernize the country’s supply-chain infrastructure.\n\nThe meeting called for lowering customs duties on specialized industrial vehicles and heavy machinery to stimulate infrastructure development.\n\n### Digitizing the tax network\n\nTurning to revenue collection, the meeting was told that the government unveiled a comprehensive plan to fully automate internal revenues, aiming to broaden a narrow tax base and eliminate bureaucratic corruption by transitioning to a \"faceless\" tax administration.\n\nThe FBR’s proposed automated management system will deploy AI and big data analytics to cross-reference wealth indicators — including real estate holdings, vehicle registrations, and banking transactions — to instantly detect under-reported income and hidden assets.\n\n\"Minimizing human intervention and discretionary powers in tax collection is the need of the hour,\" Sharif said, noting that the technological pivot would build public trust and document the informal economy.\n\nAs part of the operational restructuring, the government is reviewing the establishment of three new specialized statutory bodies: a National Faceless Audit Wing, a National Assessment Wing, and a Field Operations Wing.\n\nSharif ordered the FBR to launch the automated income tax pilot project in the capital city of Islamabad immediately.\n\n## Tobacco enforcement yields revenue surge\n\nThe meeting also reviewed ongoing crackdowns against the illicit tobacco trade.\n\nLauding provincial governments for coordinated enforcement operations against illegal cigarette manufacturing and smuggling, officials projected that heightened compliance measures will yield an additional Rs40 billion in tax revenue for the national exchequer this fiscal year.\n\nThe post Govt announces to phase out sectoral tariffs to boost exports: PM appeared first on HUM News English.",
