"textContent": "CHILAS: Authorities in Chilas on Thursday handed over the bodies of five victims of the Fairy Meadows road incident to their families, while two victims could not be identified.\n\nThe accident occurred on June 10 when a jeep carrying tourists and a local driver plunged into a deep ravine along the road linking Fairy Meadows with the Karakoram Highway in the Diamer district of Gilgit-Baltistan, police and hospital officials said.\n\nThe administration of the Regional Headquarters Hospital Chilas said that five bodies had been identified and handed over to relatives after completion of medico-legal formalities.\n\nHowever, two bodies remain in the hospital morgue as officials have so far been unable to establish their identity.\n\n“Neither identity cards nor any documents were recovered from the pockets of the unidentified victims,” the hospital administration said.\n\nOfficials said that arrangements were being made for the burial of the two unidentified victims as “amanatan” (temporary or entrusted burial) in coordination with the district administration.\n\n“We are in complete coordination with the district administration for the arrangements of the entrusted burial, which will be carried out tomorrow, God willing,” The administration of the Regional Headquarters Hospital Chilas said in a statement.\n\nThey urged the public and relatives of the unidentified victims to immediately contact the hospital to assist in identification.\n\nEarlier, police said at least seven people — including six tourists and a local driver — were killed when the vehicle veered off a narrow mountainous road and fell into a gorge while returning from Fairy Meadows toward the Karakoram Highway.\n\nAmong the deceased were tourists from Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, while the driver was a resident of the Darel area of Diamer district, according to police.\n\nThe crash occurred in a remote and rugged mountain region, where steep terrain and narrow roads frequently complicate rescue operations.\n\nLocal residents initially carried out self-help rescue efforts before official teams arrived at the scene and recovered the bodies and shifted them to hospital for identification and legal procedures.\n\nRoad accidents are common in Gilgit-Baltistan’s mountainous districts, particularly during the summer tourist season, due to difficult terrain, sharp bends and limited road safety infrastructure.\n\nThe post Fairy Meadows incident: bodies of five victims handed over to families, two unidentified appeared first on HUM News English.",
