Addressing a workshop on Pakistan–China agricultural cooperation, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said that visiting a world-renowned agricultural research institution in China was an honour and a matter of pride for both him and the people of Pakistan. He described the institute as globally recognised for its leadership in agricultural research, development, and the promotion of modern farming practices. The PM noted that the organisation is held in high esteem not only in China but across the world for its scientific contributions to food security and agricultural innovation.

During his address, he expressed gratitude for being awarded an honorary professorship, calling it a prestigious distinction. He said the recognition reflected the deep academic and scientific ties between Pakistan and China. He added that he considered himself fortunate to be in China, describing it as a “great friend” of Pakistan.

He also said the honour was not only personal but a source of pride for the entire Pakistani nation, adding that Pakistan and China were marking 75 years of diplomatic relations. According to him, both the honorary title and the anniversary represent exceptional milestones in bilateral ties.

PM Sharif said Pakistan aims to transform the “iron brotherhood” into concrete progress across agriculture, industry, research, and other strategic sectors. He emphasised that agricultural cooperation agreements between the two countries must translate into practical outcomes through sustained collaboration.

Expanding research, youth training and CPEC-linked agricultural development

PM Sharif stressed the need to empower youth and strengthen research institutions to bring about genuine transformation in Pakistan’s agricultural sector. He said long-term progress requires activating research centres, developing new talent, and integrating innovation into rural development.

He proposed deeper involvement of leading international academies, professors, and scientists in Pakistan’s agricultural advancement, noting that the country has significant domestic talent that can contribute effectively if properly guided and supported.

The PM also expressed interest in having the Chinese institution take a leading role in Pakistan’s research projects, suggesting that it could help manage and guide institutional development on a medium- to long-term basis. He said such cooperation would help deliver stronger and more sustainable results.

He announced a proposal to send 1,000 Pakistani agricultural graduates to Chinese universities for advanced training, stating that the programme would be strictly merit-based to ensure transparency and quality outcomes. He added that the initiative would help equip young professionals with modern skills and technologies.

Shehbaz Sharif said discussions with Chinese leadership during his visit were productive, friendly, and successful. He reiterated a shared commitment to accelerating progress on the China–Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), noting that agriculture has once again been prioritised within its framework.

He further said China would continue to cooperate with Pakistan in its pursuit of economic self-reliance, while highlighting the role of Pakistani students in China as “bright stars” representing the future of bilateral relations.
