Rubio links Iran strikes to ongoing talks, says deal still possible despite strikes
Following recent US strikes on Iran, Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said that the Strait of Hormuz must remain open, stressing that it will be kept accessible “one way or another” amid escalating tensions, Reuters reported.
Speaking to reporters aboard his aircraft in Jaipur during a visit to India, Rubio emphasised the strategic importance of the vital shipping route. He said there was no option for closure, adding that the United States expected the waterway to remain fully operational for global trade.
“The straits have to be open. They will be open one way or another, so they must remain open,” Rubio said, underscoring Washington’s position on maintaining freedom of navigation through the critical oil passage.
His remarks come at a time of heightened military and diplomatic activity in the region, with US-Iran tensions flaring alongside ongoing negotiations aimed at reducing hostilities and preventing further escalation.
Rubio also indicated that discussions over the language of a potential agreement with Tehran were still ongoing, suggesting that finalising the terms could take several more days. He said negotiators were still working through key details before any formal understanding could be reached.
The Strait of Hormuz, a narrow but strategically vital waterway linking the Gulf to the Arabian Sea, remains central to global energy security, with a significant portion of the world’s oil shipments passing through it.
