WEB DESK: United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Saturday commenced a pivotal four-day, four-city visit to India, aimed at renewing ties with New Delhi just a week after Washington's high-profile summit with Beijing.

The tour includes highly anticipated talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, as Washington looks to reassure a traditionally like-minded partner amid shifting geopolitical dynamics.

The top US diplomat, a devout Catholic making his first-ever trip to India, began his tour with a deeply symbolic stop in the eastern city of Kolkata.

Adorned with a traditional yellow garland over his suit, Rubio visited the headquarters of Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity, where he prayed over her tomb and met with an assembly of nuns dressed in the late humanitarian's signature white and blue saris.

Sister Marie Juan told reporters that Rubio spoke warmly about aiding the homeless, the terminally ill, and those afflicted by leprosy during his 90-minute visit.

The spiritual opening held significant domestic resonance. While the Donald Trump administration rarely prioritises human rights, elements of the president's political base have expressed mounting concern over the treatment of minority Christians under Modi's Hindu nationalist government.

Rights groups allege a rise in attacks on Christians and the vandalism of churches since 2014 claims the Indian government firmly rejects as exaggerated and politically motivated.

Sergio Gor, the US ambassador to India, noted online that the visit demonstrated a bilateral relationship built "not only on strong policies, but also on shared values."

Geopolitical realignment and the Quad

Following his stop in Kolkata, Rubio flew to New Delhi for scheduled evening talks with Prime Minister Modi.

Later in the week, he is set to participate in a ministerial meeting of the "Quad" the strategic alliance comprising Australia, India, Japan, and the United States.

The four democracies are widely seen as a crucial maritime counterweight to China’s expanding footprint in the Indian Ocean.

Beijing has long viewed the Quad with intense suspicion, previously characterising it as a containment strategy and chastising New Delhi for its participation. However, Rubio’s diplomatic mission arrives at a time when traditional American foreign policy assumptions are being fundamentally upended.

During a state visit to China last week, President Trump praised his reception by President Xi Jinping. Crucially, Trump revived the concept of a US-China "G2", a diplomatic formulation that had previously fallen out of favour due to fears among Washington's allies that they could be sidelined by bilateral dealings between the world's two largest economies.

Rubio's presence in New Delhi is therefore widely interpreted as an effort to steady nerves and reinforce America's commitment to its South Asian partners.

Energy security and shifting regional alliances

Beyond regional diplomacy, energy security sits at the very top of Rubio's agenda. Prior to his departure, the Secretary of State described India as a "great ally, great partner" and explicitly noted that Washington would be exploring avenues to increase oil sales to the country.

India's rapidly growing economy remains heavily reliant on energy imports. The nation's energy security has been severely rattled by the recent US-Israeli military campaign against Iran.

In retaliation for the attacks, Tehran choked off transit through the strategic Strait of Hormuz, causing global oil prices to skyrocket.

While New Delhi maintains historic ties with Iran, it has simultaneously cultivated a flourishing relationship with Israel, highlighted by Modi’s state visit to the country just days before the outbreak of hostilities.

The conflict has also triggered a dramatic recalibration of Washington's relationship with Pakistan. India's traditional adversary has skillfully positioned itself as a regional mediator, with its powerful army chief flying to Tehran on Friday.

While the US had steadily distanced itself from Islamabad in recent years to prioritise New Delhi, President Trump has pivotally warmed to Pakistan.

Islamabad has earned Washington's favour by praising Trump's diplomacy during last year's brief military conflict with India, which erupted after Indian strikes following the Pahalgam attack in Indian-occupied Kashmir.

Relations between Washington and New Delhi were further strained when Modi irritated Trump by failing to credit him with defusing that crisis, prompting Trump to temporarily impose punitive trade tariffs on Indian goods.

With Pakistan now welcoming a cryptocurrency firm owned by the US president's family, Rubio faces a delicate balancing act as he attempts to steer the vital US-India partnership through increasingly turbulent geopolitical waters.
