TikTok and YouTube ‘not safe enough’ for kids, warns Ofcom

LONDON: The England office of Communications (Ofcom) has warned parents of the overuse of the social media platforms TikTok and YouTube, citing that these sites are not safe for underage children. Social media use has reached unprecedented levels, with many Western developed countries issuing warnings to their citizens about its growing impact. France, Australia and Germany had banned its use for children, according to Reuters. The latest report shared by the England based broadcasting authority, Ofcom, comes up for the first time when it comes to the teenage of the UK. The regulatory immediately called for stronger action, after receiving the Ofcom data, on children's online safety, and said that Meta, Snap and Roblox had each agreed to stronger anti-grooming measures. Now that the Ofcom has unleashed the truth of how it works for the children using YouTube and TikTok, the company said it would share its concerns with the government since these sites don not follow the safety guidelines. YouTube said it worked with child safety experts to provide "industry-leading, age-appropriate" experiences for children. TikTok also said it was "very disappointing" Ofcom had failed to acknowledge its safety features. Ofcom's criticism is part of a new report into how five large social media as well as video platforms responded to its demand for stronger protections for children.
