WEB DESK: Ukrainian attack drones have struck a major Russian oil refinery deep inside enemy territory, sparking a severe fire and leaving two people dead, local officials and social media channels reported on Thursday morning.

The overnight strike targeted the Syzran Oil Refinery in Russia's Samara Oblast, located some 700 kilometres (440 miles) northeast of the Ukrainian border.

According to the independent Telegram news channel Exilenova Plus, local residents witnessed a direct hit on an oil refining unit at the facility, which is operated by the state-owned energy giant Rosneft.

Samara Oblast Governor Vyacheslav Fedorishchev later confirmed that two people were killed in the assault.

While the reports could not be immediately verified independently, the incident follows a rapidly intensifying Ukrainian campaign against Russia's domestic energy infrastructure.

Escalating campaign targets Kremlin war chest

Kyiv has long maintained that Russian energy facilities are entirely legitimate military targets. Ukrainian officials argue that disabling these sites directly impairs Moscow's ability to wage war by choking off both the fuel supplies required by frontline military vehicles and the vast export revenues that fund the Kremlin's war machine.

The strike on Syzran is part of a broader, highly coordinated strategy. Just days earlier, on 18–19 May, Ukraine’s General Staff announced successful strikes against one of Russia's largest oil refineries and a vital oil pumping station.

Those attacks followed official Russian reports of drone activity intercepted over Yaroslavl Oblast and near the capital, Moscow.

Crisis deepens for Russian refining sector

The latest wave of aerial bombardments has dealt a devastating blow to Russia's domestic fuel production capabilities.

On 20 May, Ukrainian forces launched a repeat attack on the Lukoil-Nizhegorodnefteorgsintez refinery near Kstovo, in the Nizhny Novgorod Oblast marking the second time the massive facility was hit in less than a week.

According to industry reports compiled by Reuters on 20 May, the cumulative impact of these relentless drone incursions has forced all of central Russia's major oil refineries to either completely halt operations or drastically roll back their production capacity.

The widening disruption threatens not only Russia's domestic supply chain but also its critical economic lifeline amidst ongoing international sanctions.
