ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has strongly condemned the drone attacks carried out against the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA), terming them a serious breach of the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
According to a statement issued by the Foreign Office, the attacks appear to be an attempt to further destabilise regional peace and security, stressing that such actions are unacceptable under international law.
Reaffirming close fraternal ties, Pakistan expressed full solidarity with both the Saudi leadership and the people during what it described as a critical time.
“Pakistan stands firmly with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and reaffirms its unwavering support for its security, peace, and prosperity,” the statement added.
Meanwhile, the condemnation comes as Reuters reported that Pakistan has deployed 8,000 troops, a squadron of fighter jets, and an air defence system to Saudi Arabia under a mutual defence pact. However, neither Saudi Arabia nor Pakistan’s authorities have confirmed any such development.
On September 17, 2025, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia signed a “Strategic Mutual Defence Agreement” in Riyadh, under which any attack on either country would be treated as an act of aggression against both.
The agreement both sides described as a shared commitment to strengthening security cooperation and promoting peace and stability in the region and beyond.
“This agreement aims to develop aspects of defence cooperation between the two countries and strengthen joint deterrence against any aggression,” the statement said.
Though defence ties between Islamabad and Riyadh go back to at least the 1960s, and Pakistani troops have been stationed in the Kingdom during various periods, the fresh pact strengthens earlier agreements and, most importantly, reiterates the principle that “aggression against either country shall be considered aggression against both.”
While the defence deal was reportedly being discussed over the past few years, timing is everything, and the fact that it was inked mere days after the Israeli attack on Qatar has not gone unnoticed globally. Gulf Arab states, including Saudi Arabia, appear to have increasingly realised that despite their deep ties with the United States, Washington may not necessarily come to their defence in every scenario. As a result, they are now exploring alternative security partnerships.
Pakistan, which maintains strong ties with Gulf monarchies and possesses a battle-tested military, appears to be a natural partner in this evolving strategic landscape.
The importance of the Pak-Saudi defence pact, therefore, cannot be overstated. It represents a significant diplomatic and geopolitical development for Pakistan and is expected to further deepen already cordial bilateral relations between the two countries.
It is also possible that other Gulf states may consider similar agreements with Pakistan in the future. While bilateral defence ties will continue to play an important role, there remains a broader regional security gap when viewed from the perspective of collective Middle Eastern stability.
