"textContent": "VATICAN CITY: Pope Leo marked World Press Freedom Day on Sunday by condemning ongoing violations of media freedom and paying tribute to journalists killed while carrying out their work.\n\nSpeaking at the end of his weekly prayer in Saint Peter’s Square, the pontiff said the occasion served as a reminder of both the vital role of independent journalism and the increasing dangers faced by reporters worldwide.\n\n“Today we celebrate World Press Freedom Day … unfortunately, this right is often violated, sometimes in blatant ways, sometimes in more hidden forms,” he said.\n\nThe pope urged people to remember journalists who have lost their lives in pursuit of the truth, particularly those reporting from conflict zones and areas affected by violence.\n\n“We remember the many journalists and reporters who have been victims of war and violence,” he added.\n\nObserved annually on May 3 and backed by UNESCO, World Press Freedom Day highlights the importance of safeguarding independent media and honours journalists who have died in the line of duty.\n\nIn previous remarks, Pope Leo has described journalism as a cornerstone of democratic societies, stressing that access to truthful information is a public good that must be protected from manipulation. He has also repeatedly called for the release of journalists detained or prosecuted for doing their work.\n\nThe post Pope Leo marks global press day, honours journalists killed on duty appeared first on HUM News English.",
