WASHINGTON: The US House Ethics Committee will hold a public hearing at 2 PM on Tuesday to decide whether Democratic Congresswoman Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick should face disciplinary action, including possible expulsion. The case involves allegations linked to nearly $5 million in COVID-19 relief funds. According to prosecutors, the money came from a FEMA-related contract tied to her family’s healthcare business and was allegedly overpaid. Instead of returning the funds, it is claimed they were transferred through multiple accounts and used for political campaign contributions as well as personal expenses. She faces charges including theft of government funds, money laundering, illegal campaign financing, and filing false tax records. A 59-page Ethics Committee report found “substantial evidence of conduct consistent with the allegations in the indictment, as well as more extensive misconduct.” Cherfilus-McCormick has denied all allegations and pleaded not guilty.
