BUDAPEST: Hungary’s opposition Tisza party has taken a strong lead in the final opinion polls before the national election, increasing chances of a major political change in the country. According to the latest surveys, the Tisza party led by Peter Magyar is ahead with around 55 to 57 per cent support. This puts it in a strong position against Prime Minister Viktor Orban and his ruling Fidesz party. If these results are confirmed, the opposition could win a clear majority in the 199-member parliament, ending Orban’s 16-year rule. Speaking to the media, Magyar said his party is “optimistic” after seeing the latest poll results and strong voter turnout. On the other hand, government officials say they are still confident of victory. Voter turnout remained high throughout the day, showing strong public interest in this important election. Political experts say if the opposition wins, it could bring major changes in Hungary’s policies, especially its relations with the European Union. It may also help unlock EU funds that were previously blocked. The Tisza party has promised reforms to reduce corruption and improve the justice system. However, major changes will depend on whether it gets a two-thirds majority in parliament. Prime Minister Orban has been facing criticism in recent years due to economic problems, rising inflation, and concerns over governance. The final results are expected later, and the outcome could mark a significant turning point in Hungary’s political history.
