  "textContent": "Actor Eric Dane, best known for playing Dr Mark Sloan in _Grey’s Anatomy_ , has died at the age of 53, his family confirmed.\n\nThe star passed away on Thursday, nearly a year after publicly revealing he had been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.\n\n“With heavy hearts, we share that Eric Dane passed on Thursday afternoon following a courageous battle with ALS,” his family said in a statement. They added he spent his final days surrounded by close friends, his wife and his two daughters, Billie and Georgia.\n\n## From ‘McSteamy’ to major TV roles\n\nDane rose to global fame as Dr Mark Sloan, nicknamed McSteamy, on _Grey’s Anatomy_. Introduced in the show’s second season in 2006, the role quickly became a fan favourite and was later expanded into a main cast position.\n\nHe remained on the hit medical drama until 2012, when his character was written out.\n\nBeyond _Grey’s Anatomy_ , Dane built a steady television and film career, appearing in HBO’s _Euphoria_  as Cal Jacobs and starring in TNT’s _The Last Ship_.\n\nHis film credits included _Valentine’s Day_ , _Burlesque_ , _Marley & Me_, _American Carnage_  and _Bad Boys: Ride or Die_.\n\n## Early life and career path\n\nBorn in San Francisco in 1972, Dane initially pursued water polo before discovering acting in high school. After moving to Los Angeles with little money, he landed guest roles on series including _Saved by the Bell_ , _The Wonder Years_ , _Roseanne_  and _Married… with Children_.\n\nHe also appeared in two seasons of _Charmed_  before his breakout success on _Grey’s Anatomy_.\n\n## Family and personal life\n\nDane married actress Rebecca Gayheart in 2004.
