Yet thousands of languages remain under-represented across Wikimedia projects. To help change this, the **Wikitongues User Group** is excited to announce the return of the **Wiki Loves Mother Tongue Campaign 2026** , starting on **21 February 2026** , to mark **I**nternational Mother Language Day, titled _‘**Youth voices on multilingual education’.**_\n\nWe invite **Wikimedia communities, affiliates, language groups, educators, and individual contributors** from around the world to **participate in or host activities** as part of this global campaign.\n\n## **What is Wiki Loves Mother Tongue?**\n\n**Wiki Loves Mother Tongue** is a global Wikimedia campaign that encourages contributors to:\n\n * **Create new articles** in their mother tongues\n * **Improve existing content** in under-represented languages\n * **Translate articles** into local and Indigenous languages\n * **Build and strengthen language communities** within Wikimedia\n\n\n\nThe campaign centres language justice and knowledge equity, supporting the idea that everyone should be able to access and contribute to free knowledge in the language they know best.\n\n## **Who Can Participate?**\n\nWe welcome participation from:\n\n * Wikimedia language communities and user groups\n * Wikimedia affiliates and thematic organizations\n * Indigenous and minoritised language communities\n * Educators, students, and language activists\n * Individual Wikimedians passionate about multilingual knowledge\n\n\n\nYou do **not** need to be an expert to join; new contributors are welcome, and support will be provided.\n\n## **How Can Communities Get Involved?**\n\nCommunities and groups can participate in several ways:\n\n### **Host a Local or Online Activity**\n\n * Edit-a-thons or translation drives\n * Training workshops for new contributors\n * Community storytelling or documentation sessions\n\n\n\n### **Participate as Contributors**\n\n * Join an existing campaign dashboard\n * Contribute articles, edits, or translations\n * Support outreach, mentorship, or coordination\n\n\n\n### **Partner With Us**\n\n * Co-organize regional or thematic activities\n * Support communications, documentation, or learning resources\n\n\n\nThe Wikitongues User Group will provide:\n\n * An **Outreach Dashboard**\n * Campaign resources and guidance\n * Promotion of participating communities\n * Recognition for active participants and organizers\n\n\n\n## **Key Dates**\n\n * **Campaign start:** 21 February 2026\n * **Activities:** February 21–March 21, 2026 (exact dates flexible by community)\n\n\n\n## **How to Sign Up**\n\nInterested communities and individuals can:\n\n * Sign up via the campaign page on the **EVENT PAGE HERE**\n * Reach out to the Wikitongues User Group via Meta or email\n * Propose activities, languages, or focus areas you’d like to work on\n\n\n\nEarly sign-ups are encouraged to allow time for coordination and support.\n\n## **Why Participate?**\n\nBy joining **Wiki Loves Mother Tongue 2026** , you help:\n\n * Increase visibility for under-represented languages\n * Empower communities to tell their own stories\n * Strengthen multilingual participation in the Wikimedia Movement\n * Contribute to a more inclusive and equitable internet\n\n\n\nLanguage diversity is not optional; it’s essential to the future of free knowledge.\n\n## **Join Us**\n\nWhether you’re a long-time Wikimedian or someone contributing in your language for the first time, **your voice matters**.\n\nLet’s come together in 2026 to celebrate, protect, and grow the world’s linguistic diversity one article, one edit, and one language at a time.\n\n**Join the Wiki Loves Mother Tongue Campaign 2026.**",
