Mathieu van der Poel put in one of the time trials of his life to secure a long stint in the hotseat on stage 4 of the Tour de Suisse. One by one, other favourites arrived home outside his benchmark until only race leader Tadej Pogačar remained on course.

At the end of the 23.7-kilometre test, Pogačar thundered into Aarburg and sprinted to the line. And the time stayed green. Pogačar arrived home 0.4 of a second (rounded up in the results below) faster than Van der Poel to seal his second stage win of the Tour de Suisse.

Pogačar also extended his lead overall, and will take an advantage of 4 minutes 22 seconds into the final stage.
