"textContent": "Cor Vos\n\nHistory has been made at the 2026 Giro d'Italia with XDS-Astana's Guillermo Thomas Silva winning Uruguay's first ever stage after an incredibly dramatic finale. The 24-year-old also took over the pink jersey of race leader.\n\nThe Giro's second day began in relatively sedate fashion, but its final act was anything but. Shortly after the two-man breakaway was caught, the race was neutralised following a mass crash with 23 km to go. The peloton was allowed to resume after about 5 km of idling behind the commissaire's car, and just a few kilometres before the start of the final climb where Jonas Vingegaard attacked clear with Giulio Pellizzari and Lennert van Eetvelt.\n\nWith the large chase group struggling at first to work together in the run-in, the three leaders held a narrow advantage until the final kilometre, where chasers began to arrive in ones and twos, then all at once with a few hundred metres to go. XDS-Astana hit the front with a couple of riders fierce with intent, and it was Christian Scaroni who led out his teammate to a memorable victory.\n\nThe crash led to a handful of abandons, with UAE duo Jay Vine and Marc Soler, as well as Uno-X Mobility's Ådne Holter all taken to hospital. Santiago Buitrago was another confirmed DNF by day's end. A very bloodied Adam Yates was able to finish the stage, but he crossed the line in a group almost 14 minutes down, his GC aspirations over.\n\n[race_result id=13 stage_id=89964 count=5 gc=0 year=2026]\n\n[race_result id=13 stage_id=89964 count=5 gc=5 year=2026]\n\n### This post is for subscribers only\n\nBecome a member to get access to all content\n\nSubscribe now",
