How Seixas' Tour de France debut could influence the battle for his signature

In the absence of knowable fact, media fills the void. Just ask L'Équipe , which ran four pages this morning on the announcement that Paul Seixas will race this summer's Tour de France. We're on our third story about it in 24 hours.

The announcement video was heartwarming, displaying the charming parochial nature of French cycling in full view, and the two competing sides trying to pull the 19-year-old superstar-in-waiting towards their world view.

You could see it in the final closing shot of the 90-second clip, the not-so subtle metaphor of his own grandmother hugging him tight, not letting go, wanting to keep him within the safety of family and France forever. Should he not reach the summit of eternal Tour glory, the pillow of comfortable, lovable Thibaut Pinot-shaped failure awaits. There are worse lives to lead.

But from the vantage point we have in May 2026, Paul Seixas is not like the French hopes that have come before him, which would indicate that he has the drive and bravery to do everything in his power to make sure he reaches the heights everyone believes him capable of.

And so, the highly rumoured transfer to UAE Team Emirates is surely the path of least resistance. A huge salary, a monied team of support staff who've proven they can get you there, and a star-studded roster of super domestiques (we'll get to the Tadej Pogačar conundrum in a bit).

You often hear hometown sports stars, who depart the team they grew up supporting for a true behemoth, rationalise the situation as one where they owe it to themselves to get the maximum out of their short careers. In elite sport, there is little room for sentimentality. After all, you have a yawning retirement lasting decades for all of that.

And Seixas to UAE has felt inevitable for the past few weeks. The reports in the media from sources of varying trustworthiness; the invitation extended to Paul's younger brother Nino to winter training camps; the chumminess of UAE team boss Mauro Gianetti at finish lines. The smoke has been there for a while.
