  "textContent": "Suvi Loponen, Daniel McCart, Basso Bikes\n\nIt's with mixed feelings that I confess that it's been over a year since I attended the press camp of Basso's newest road bike, the Sempre Veloce, or SV for short. Up in northern Italy, on Basso's home roads around Bassano del Grappa, I got two rides on a slightly large version of the new flagship bike, and then came home to wait for a more correctly sized bike to arrive.\n\nThat took nine months, and at the time of writing, Basso has also launched a new version of its Palta gravel bike, with a whitepaper so similar to the bike reviewed here that I had to double-check I'd opened the right file. And I'll be honest: I've never been as close to cancelling a review as I was with this one. Not only did the delivery take a while, but when the bike finally arrived, several components didn't suit my fit, and then, as the final blow, the supplied DT Swiss wheels were recalled in the week after I managed to get those component swaps done.\n\nSo, no, the SV and I didn't start off on the right foot at all. Pretty much everything that could have been difficult _was_ difficult. As such, the early days with the SV were not filled with love but rather mild resentment. Slowly, that turned into fondness as the bike won me over because, once the SV was finally rideable, it turned out to be a genuinely enjoyable experience.\n\nThere are things about the SV that genuinely impressed me – primarily the way it accelerates, its low weight, and the paint job. There are also things I wouldn't outright praise, mainly on the value and customisation options front.\n\n****The short of it:**** Basso's racey not-race-bike, that is a joy to ride, especially when the road starts to point up.\n****Highs:**** Light, snappy ride feel. Nice colourways.\n****Lows:**** On the expensive side, somewhat limited build options, parts availability issues compromised fit\n****Weight:**** 7.05 kg with one bottle cage, 32 mm tyres with TPU inner tubes and computer mount, and Shimano Ultegra crankset.\n****Price:**** Complete builds start at €7,949 / £6,999 / US$10,495), frameset only €4,999/US$6,795\n\n## The core of Sempre Veloce\n\nAs you might guess from the name of this bike, it is a very Italian creation, from a very Italian brand. Basso is a Vicenza-based Italian brand that is named after the family that still owns and runs it today, and it continues to do its framebuilding, painting and final assembly at its home base – something that is increasingly rare. The company started, like many Italian brands, by making racing bikes, but over the last few years, Basso has focused on bringing out bikes that are more targeted at the everyday riders, rather than the pros.\n\nBehind the Curtain: Basso BikesIt’s named after a family, still run by that family, and is ever-growing.Escape CollectiveSuvi Loponen\n\nBasso pitches the Sempre Veloce, SV, as a \"performance comfort\" road bike. In practice, that means the SV sits between a pure race bike and a proper endurance bike, and aims to be a little bit of both without becoming neither. It's an all-rounder, but not an all-road bike in the sense of something like a Cannondale Synapse. This is still a sleek, integrated, fast-looking road bike.
