When people think of the 'Japan Art Islands', Naoshima is usually the first name that comes to mind, followed by Teshima and Inujima — and if they have attended the Setouchi Triennale before, they may mention a few others.
However, there is an island that truly deserves to be called a Japan Art Island. This island is Awashima. For starters, Awashima has a truly fascinating history, and in its most recent years, it has been hosting artists in residence since before the Setouchi Triennale began.
Today, I want to focus on a piece of art (that's really two artworks in one) that originated from this artist-in-residence program.
